December budget update

I'm not going to add money to the emergency fund in December (i'm going to add any reto money that's left over after the holidays and I might add my overtime to the emergency fund, but i'm not going to budget any amount to go towards it.

December budget
Laundry 20
Food & Basics 100
Water Delivery 16
Gas and Car 100
Car Ins 82.63
renters Ins 10.58
Electric Bill 40
Cell Phone 55
Fun 70
Dp Fund 729.25
----
Rent 795
Dp Fund 428.46

Updates are fun

$7,057.82 = House DP FUND!!!!

Black friday shopping yielded some very heavily discounted clothes (staples for any wardrobe)... I used some of my retro money because the deals were just too good to pass up and I normally get clothes from my mother (who I no longer talk to...) for x-mas so i limited myself to $50 bucks... it was awesome.

I got a 44 dollar skirt; a $40 black cardigan; an 18 top; and a 30 top that matches the skirt all for $54 total... and its the nice stuff!!!!!

But I still need to find Boyfriends mommy a present... and my bestest friend (she finally told me what she wanted!)

so i'll be calling the disney store every day until there is some signs of life of my desired gift...

I also collect the Disney Snow globes from JC Penny... and since my mother has some of the older ones, i'm currently playing on Ebay trying to score the old ones again... so that will be where some of the retro money will be heading to!

xmas spending

Well the xmas account is whittling down....

I still haven't added everything up, but soon i'll post what's left... but i also got a hair cut, bought some stuff for the apartment like trash bags and kitchen essentials that I was out off... and I also bought a yoga/pilates band because the day after thanksgivings starts my new work out plan, and frankly, I love variety in my workouts, so its something new to play with!

I just have Brian's mommy left and that will be finished at 4:00am on Black Friday!

I changed my auto insurance!

After working out a few technical glitches, my 6 month auto insurance is $495.76 (or 82.62 a month). My 12 month renters insurance policy is 127 a Year (or 10.58 a month)

I now have a $500 deductible, not a $750 deductible and I'm saving ruffly $3.00 a month.

My cards should come in a few days, and AAA will be sending me a refund for the remain 5 or so months that I paid for in 7 to 10 days.

I have $577 in my auto insurance fund, so after the 495.76, I have 81.24 left that can go towards the renters insurance policy that I didn't have before. I'll take the rest of the AAA refund check to make up the difference on the policy, the extra, I might set aside for a hopefully one day fully funded $500 deductible fund....

But if Crapy Govenor man tripples my "car tax" I'll have to put the extra money towards that since I don't save monthly for it.

California law...

With the talk of retirement funds getting lost and wiped out, the baby boomers breaking the social security fund, and so many lost jobs pushing people to retire early... I stumbled upon these articles and looked up the suplimental laws associated with them

New York Times:
http://newoldage.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/11/20/unenforced-filial-responsibility-laws/?scp=1&sq=filial&st=cse

http://www.ncpa.org/pub/ba/ba521/

After reading through these two articles… I’m uber worried that I’m going to have to take care of my alcoholic mother financially in retirement… all because she didn’t abandon me before my 18th birthday. Apparently it won’t matter that she drank all the years I grew up when the court mandated that she remain sober… It won’t matter that let my abusive father stay in our lives until she finally got the backbone to get the divorce... It won't matter that she was never really a mother for me and I had to wait until I could support myself to get the hell out of there…

I’ll have to cover her butt because she didn't get rid of me… and FYI-- She has no retirement savings, owns her house (and the value is plummetting) and will rely entirely on Social Security...

And just so you know the articles above aren’t crazy… I looked up the actual California Family Code laws, the Penal code, and the California Welfare and Institution laws...

FAMILY.CODE SECTION

No county or city and county or officer oremployee thereof shall threaten any such relative with any legalaction against him by or in behalf of the county or city and countyor with any penalty whatsoever.

Maybe I should look into legally disavowing a parent… I hear it can be done... but I can't find ANYTHING on it... stupid internet. I google and this post comes up... that's just weird...

But should the court try and get me to comply with this if i'm ever in the position where she needs a home, I would get a lawyer and claim her unfit motherhood and alcohol dependence... maybe there would be a loop hole there.
My sister can take care of that horrible woman... not me.

California unemployment rises...

Accorrding to the La Times:
  • The over-all state unemployment is at 8.2%
  • Orange County: 6%
No wonder I haven't heard back from that job I applied for last week... but it normally takes 2 to 3 weeks to hear back from an organization like a city. If i don't hear anything by the 1st of December i'll call the HR guy.

The two open positions in my department have still yet to be filled, but I think one will be filled and they might go back to the drawing board for the other space....

last night was my 11 month anniversary with my boyfriend... I finally got to treat him to dinner and it was yummy!

----
In stock market news... I've lost a little over 2500 in my mutual funds... I think I might pull 600 out of the 1600 I have saved for buying that extra year with my employer and max out my roth for 2008 with mutual funds. I'll buy 100 at the end of Nov, 100 in Dec, 100 in Jan, 100 in feb, and 100 in march and 100 right before the cut off for 2008 in April.

retro pay arrives....

and it's not what i hoped it would be... I'm only getting a 4% raise... not a 6% raise... (all because of my not so stellar review.)

I can't blame them-- It's my own fault for my bad review, but it does make me sad. (an estimated 300 sad...)

After I took the 87.39 i was expexting in overtime from this week, plus the retro-- I have $614.02 (on the plus side, looks like my xmas fund is intact! yeah!)

Luckily, everyone is getting an across the board raise increase of 4% in january so that will help boost it up.

House DP Fund: $7,025.43

roommate update+ car ins update

I've been assurred by my roommate that under no circumstances will she break our lease.

Phew...

But just to be on the safe side, i'm going to keep to the plan as though she is going to bail. (better safe then sorry and if I do end up switching jobs, there will be some down time between paychecks so its best to beef up my accounts.)

I called State Farm.... They have a really great rate plan if I get renter's insurance through them...

If I get renters... The car insurance is 81.78 a month (additional renters ins 10.58) = 92.36 and that makes my deductible drop from 750 to 500!!!!!!!!

If I forgo the renters insurance, it's 90.87 a month. So for 1.49 more, I get renters insurance too... so if I switch to State Farm, I'm going for the renters insurance too. My AAA car insurance is a few dollars cheaper a month without any renters insurance because my deductible is higher... but after 3 years with state farm i'll qualify for additional discounts.

hmmmm.... any thoughts?

I can afford a condo...?

Thinking about all the unfortunate downsides of roommates and the ordeals I've had to under-go since i moved out and embraced the "real world," I got to thinking... What if I make it through the end of this lease... and embarked solo. Oh the sanity...

So i popped onto the California First Time homebuyers website and plugged in some numbers and found out how much the govenment says i can have for a loan... then i hit up red fin.

There's a one bedroom, 700 square foot condo in a desirable area on the market for 159,900.00. Using that figure, these are the requirements for the Calf. FHB:
  • Interest Rate 7.0%
  • Down payment 3.00% = $4,797.00
  • Closing costs (assuming 2%)= $3,000.00
  • Money needed to purchase... $7,797.00------ which i'll have by January 1st in excess.

Then I went back to the property to start looking at the other fees involved with homeownership. Monthly dues

  • HOA # 1= $218
  • HOA #2= $46.00
  • Property taxes= $305.00
  • Mortage= $1,032.00
  • Homeowners Insurance= $50.00 (plugged the actual address and looked up data like how far it was away from a fire station.... so its pretty accurate.)
  • P.M.I =$134.42 (used a basic calculator online)

Then I plugged in my other expenses:

  • Laundry $20.00
  • Food $140.00
  • gas and car $100.00
  • Ebill $45.00
  • Water bill $50.00
  • Cell: $55
  • Fun: $75.00
  • Savings: $107.98

That's my exact take home pay right now ($2,378.40)... not with the 6% "retro raise" or my 4% raise in January... That's with me claiming zero on all my checks for FED and State.

Am I missing something, or would this be a probable and possible solution to further housing woes... ???

Each month I'll run the stats again as my house downpayment grows above the needed income... But I think I may call the association and ask to see their monthly meeting minuets and see how the other properties in the complex are fairing.

December Budget

With the possibilities and challenges that come with my roommates financial situation... the new Dec budget. I shaved some cash off some of the other budget categories so hopefully I can get by and make due.

  • Laundry $20
  • Food & Basics $100
  • Water Delivery $16 (which will be cancelled in Dec because my contract is up)
  • Gas and Car $100
  • Car insurance $96 (calling State farm tomorrow. I recieved an offer in the mail for $81.00 a month and only a $500 deductible. I really like those numbers. So i'm calling tomorrow.)
  • Electric Bill $40
  • Cell Phone $55
  • Fun money$50
  • Building up the Emergency Fund @ BofA $90.00
  • Down payment Fund $622.2
  • Rent $795
  • Down payment Fund $394.20

Overtime, holiday pay, etc ---> Christmas. Since I dropped the money I was setting aside for in December

Retro Pay---> beefing up emergency funds.

roommate having financial difficulties

I may have a problem...

My roommate was telling me of some of her financial problems in a serious sort of way the other night. With the bad financial market (lack of great well paying jobs with liveable wages) and her industry( which requires her to take certain classes to obtain a certificate since she is still going towards her AA and BA).... We might have a situation.

Right now I'm unsure if It will affect our current lease... I chose a responsible friend who knows how to budget, has not debt other then her car payment, and had a few grand in the bank as a nice emergency fund.

But there have been changes from when we first started living together...
  1. When we signed the lease, her father was covering some of her expenses when she originally moved out.... like gas for her car, and some help with things... and he's not anymore. But this didn't seem like a problem. She adjusted spending and things seemed to work out.
  2. Then roommate wasn't allowed to take classes for a symester due to some academic issues at the college (she tried on-line classes and didn't do so great... she now knows she needs to take in class courses) and decided against the part time morning job she was considering to help stay busy and use the down time from school in a good way. ... but she had no problem still with everyting financially.
  3. Now she's having trouble getting back into the school to continue now that her probabtion has ended. She needs to take courses to get raises at her job (credit= bigger raise)... but the real problem is that:

Her dad is now having her pay some of her brothers dorm/apt rent out in college till the end of his symester (He splits it 50/50 with her mom (his ex wife)... but she's been out of a job so now he's having my roommate pay 25%, his ex wife pay 25% and he's paying 50% of the place.)

She mentioned wanting to stay living with me and keeping out lease--- (and looking for a part time job so she can)... but she said something along the lines of "not wanting to leave you in the middle of our lease..." her name is on the lease itself....

That is the statement that worries the crap outta me. OUR lease is still ten months of rent payments away... and I don't know if I can find someone to replace her if she needs to boot....

But i'm working on the problem right now.. Assuming things go down the crapper....
  • I mentioned last night that i'd be willing to switch bedrooms if she has someone who wants to "split" the master bedroom with her... thus reducing the amount of rent she will pay. She's not sure if she knows anyone, but she's thinking about it.
  • I'm going to switch out my emergency fund to cash. (i currently have half stuck up in CD's... but i'm going to pull money from my HDP fund to put in my emergency fund, and replace that money with the CD's since I won't be buying before they naturally come to turn.
  • Devise a cut back budget and start beefing up additional emergency fund reserves... It may mean a smaller christmas... less fun... and less grocergy and gas money, but could be a huge problem since I don't know of anyone to rent out the other room to.

After that, I don't know...

But I will remind her of the financial ramifications of breaking a lease... but I hope it doesn't come to that... I don't want to, but it will definently change all my plans to save for a house if she leaves me high and dry like that. With me saving over $1,000 a month, I can cover her $700 rent contribution... but that will leave me in a place I don't want to be.

updated holiday shopping...

  1. My sister's birthday present --- I know what she wants
  2. 1/2 sister = blanket (materials are all I need to purchase)
  3. the boyfriend--- I finally have his list!
  4. boyfriends daddy (I have an Idea)
  5. boyfriends mommy (I have an Idea)
  6. boyfriends sister +boyfriends sister's fiance (i'm in their wedding) = Nice giftcard (or apparently stuff for the wedding???????)
  7. Master Chef Friend---- we have a list finally!

roommate --- DONE!

Friday I get paid and then I can start sorting out all the holiday shopping

WOW I've Been BUSY!

First and foremost, I've applied for a new job--- with another city... and I'm really excited for this opportunity.

It's for a position that's a level above mine and would be absolutely everything I've ever wanted to do for a career. So I'm crossing my fingers and hoping for an interview. With all city jobs, the interview process is long and lengthy so it will be weeks before anything is more clear on whether I get an interview... but there are usually multiple panel interviews. The salary is an increase in what I'm currently making; the monthly benefits and flex cash system are equally as great (if not better) then my current job; and the pension is 2.5 @ 55. (I currently have 2.7@ 55--- But would take this job in a heartbeat).

I also worked a gala last night for my favorite charity Child SHARE. I coordinated all the volunteers which I recruited, and ran the floor for the night keeping people in the loop with the constant changes. (one of the ladies who runs Child SHARE made sure to inform me that most of their events run smoothly, but since they were invited to this event, along with seven other charities, the hosting group "dropped the ball.") Besides some hard to work with individuals, the night was a success and I was able to "show my abilities" in a favorable way.

I was unofficially offered a job!!!!!!!!! It's still a working out the figures on paper and a few conversations down the line kind of offer.... but WAHOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I need to forward my resume and a new cover letter... talk figures... But I would be the events coordinator for Orange County if all goes through---- which is also everything I've ever wanted to do for a career--- plus add the fact that it's a cause in which I personally love love love love! Where going to talk and run numbers in January. As a 501-c3 charity, I'm not expecting to be blown away with their offer, but I might just take the job!

I guess it all depends on what happens with the other city job I applied for since that should come to a decision before the New Year (I talked with their HR dept because I had a few questions about the position.)

Either way, My future is looking bright and promising!!!!

updated Shopping list without spending money

talked to my 1/2 sister and I'm not allowed to get her or her hubby anything this year, or the girls. (but sense the twin's birthdays are in dec I told her I still want get them stuff... plus i've been an absentee auntie for their whole lives so it would be a nice gesture thing.) But if she really insists, i'll either donate the items I bought to a charity or return them and then use that money to buy other gifts for needy children. I believe in respecting the wishes of parents.

But I told her i'm making her x-mas present (i'm making her a blanket)and that she can't refuse whatever it is. I'll see what she says there... so right now my shopping looks like this:

  1. My sister's birthday present (she told me what she wants and its going to cost around 40-50 bucks)
  2. 1/2 sister = blanket (materials around 15 bucks)
  3. the boyfriend ???????? waiting on list
  4. boyfriends daddy (I have an Idea)
  5. boyfriends mommy (I have an Idea)
  6. boyfriends sister +boyfriends sister's fiance (i'm in their wedding) = Nice giftcard with BF
  7. roommate (got her one stocking stuffer) = a flag frame. She was given one from her fiance (before I met her) who passed away serving the country and she has never gotten around to framing it and she mentioned it the other day (and how she doesn't have the money to get one right now with holiday shopping) I asked if she would mind if I bought her one for xmas maybe and she was okay with the idea.
  8. Master Chef Friend??????????

Looking back...

http://ambellamy-womaninred.blogspot.com/2007/07/getting-back-on-band-wagon.html

A little more then a year ago I was talking about condo's in the 350,000 range for something 500 sq feet and dinky...

today those 1 bedroom condos are selling for 200,000 or less and are around 800 square feet.

Guess I didn't really loose out on flushing my money down the toilet.

lol--- bye bye Xmas fund....

So... that Christmas money.... ---Lets say its already christmas in my apartment--- (i decorated and had to pick up a few things so i could)

Tree(and its 6.5 feet and full and bushy!woot for the steal at Longs Drugs) - 16.00; deorative Bulbs for the whole tree- 8; snowflakes- 4; colored garland- 4; snow (to make into a skirt) 3; tree lights 9= Approx: TOTAL: 44

stocking- 15; pine cones 2.50; ho ho ho sign 2.50; xmas Cards: 8; wrapping paper 2.00; tape:2.00 approx: total 32.00

My boyfriend bought our first little house for a santa's village and some snow to make it look uber cool. He even got a stocking to match mine!

Then I started the Christmas shopping for gifts.

My Sister: Done
half sister: 1/2 done I think??? (depends if i make her a blanket for christmas or not)
My Half Sisters 2 twins: Done
+ Birthday Presents for each of them (they are Dec girls)
Boyfriends daddy: Half done

I over spent $92.03--- but I should have that money coming back to me from the overtime on the next paycheck (Approx: 116.91 and more). So wahoo for really cool planning!Presents still to buy:

My sister's birthday present (using the poll worker check for this. extra to the general xmas fund)
  • 1/2 sister's Husband
  • 1/2 sister
  • 1/2 sister's other two kids
  • the boyfriend
  • boyfriends daddy
  • boyfriends mommy
  • boyfriends sister
  • boyfriends sister's fiance (i'm in their wedding)
  • roommate (got her one stocking stuffer)
  • Master Chef Friend

Plus around 30 cookie and holiday sweet bags for my friends at church... and i dunno anything about co-workers....

The Christmas Budget looks like this on the HIGH END!!!!... ($50 sister's birthday; $25.00 finish 1/2 sister; $30 1/2 sisters hubby; $50.00 for both 1/2's other children; $50.00 boyfriend; $60.00 for boyfriends parents; $50.00 for boyfriends sister and fiance; $30.00 roommate; $25.00 Chef Friend)

Let's see if I can keep $370.00 the MAX for the rest of my holiday splendor shopping. The reason for the so many many presents to buy for... is the holiday invitations i've recieved. I'll probably be having 2 christmas celebrations. (my family @ my half sister's house... and my boyfriend's family at his house.)

I'll have to "find" around 200.00 (since the poll worker money is around $80.00, and i set aside $100.00 in december for xmas decorating-- which i did now.) If for some ungodly reason my retro pay and raise are NOT on my november paycheck.... i'll use some of the $1600 i have sitting around for my retirement buy back since that's a really high estimate.

payday

House Dp fund: 6626.90

plane ticket: fully funded---- Wahoo.

Extra OT: 87.96 (the start of the xmas fund incase the retro check doesn't come next check...)

I recieved my electronic copy of my review... which means my next paycheck SHOULD have all my back pay on it from May... It's been so long, I stopped counting up how much they owe me... but its over $700.00---- more then enough to cover christmas (even the purchase of my very own tree.)

_______
Still have not recieved the call back from Farmers INS... Looks like i'll be staying with AAA after all. I guess it was still good to hunt around for prices to make sure i'm getting the most bang for my buck.

I also got my $12.00 rewards to Ralphs (their new point program is great.) While i spend very little in groceries per month, every time i bring my own bag, they add 5 points (the equilavent of $50.00 in grocery spending. ) So I did not spend 1200 in groceries in 2 months... but i get 12.00 FREE. and they send me coupons too. bueno. especially since this month was my "cut back on everything" to get rid of the plane ticket money i borrowed.

I got TAGGED for the first time ever...

In all my years of blogging, this is the first time i've been tagged for some random information about me.

Thanks Nasa green (http://www.nasagreen.blogspot.com/)

So, Seven Random Things about me:
  1. I can swallow pills without water (but I prefer to use water.)
  2. When I get the hick-ups... to get rid of them i drink water upside down from the wrong end of the glass. Works everytime.
  3. I've only been on an airplane twice. (once to and from Oklahoma for a confrence for school... and once to and from Texas with a conection flight in Colorado to visit friends.)
  4. I'm suck a nerd when it comes to books. I love Harry Potter, the twilight series, A great a terrible beauty, and anything my tamora Pierce. I don't care that i'm 22 with a B.A. and buy my books in the teen reading section of the book store.
  5. I'm an incloset artsy fartsy girl. I sketch and paint occassionally and I play the acoustic guitar.
  6. I like to cook, and i'm actually getting pretty good at it too! I've even invented a few recipes and I can now follow directions like a pro.
  7. When i'm in a funky mood, i like to busy myself and clean clean clean clean. I like being busy and doing physical things when I have a lot on my mind.

Now I need to pick seven others to be tagged:
