Kiva interesting tidbits

I was looking at my KIVA Account today, and it says i've lent out $375.00... which is true... but it didn't take me $375.00 to lend $375.00 to people all over the world.

At one point I had put $150.00 into KIVA using my Credit Card rebate checks... whenever i got that "free money" i plugged it into Kiva and loaned it to someone who needed it. Ya, i didn't get interest on the money... and it took some people a while to pay it all back... but there's something about the simple power of KIVA that's addicting... I'm helping people all over the world... and its fantastic.

I then took out $100.51 from the account when i was busy with finding my condo and moving and remodeling and stuff and since I started re-lending again, i've put back $75.51

So in reality, I only have $125.00 tied up in Kiva... but because I've been re-lending the funds out as they get paid back to me, that $125.00 turned into $375.00 of lending power.

For June, I have enough $$$ in repayments that I won't have to put any cash into the account to make a loan for June... so that same $125.00 will grow into $400.00. Sure i'll probably have to put $25 in for July... but its kind of mind boggling to see the trickle down effect.

New budget

New Monthly Budget starting June 1st:

I believe we won’t be getting those expected work “cuts” for the time being. Most likely they will filter in next year as the hiring freeze and pay freezes remain in place. Either way, it’s time to reevaluate the budget and make a few modifications.

Paycheck #1 ($1,290.13)
• Mortgage: $828.38
• HOA: $250.00
• Offering: $130.00
• Extra Mortgage Principle: $81.75

Paycheck #2 ($1,290.13)
• Offering: $130.00
• Christmas Account $50.00
• Emergency Fund $128.13
• Gasoline $140.00
• Groceries and Food $150.00
• Going out/eating out $50.00
• All Insurance premiums (Car, House, Earthquake) $102.00
• Roth IRA $250.00
• Utility Bills (Cell, Electric, Internet) $150.00
• Piano Lessons (2 lessons) $40.00
• Other/Random Unbudgeted $100.00

I’m increasing my extra mortgage principle payments because I’ve been spending too much money on frivolous things as of late, and instead of saving my extra, I’ve been spending it. An extra $21.75 a month won’t be missed so I might as well get an automatic 5.25% interest on it.

I’m increasing my emergency fund savings, again because I’ve been spending a lot of money lately and I’d like to rein myself in. It also seemed like a good idea to up the amount since I decided I want to try and get $15,000.00 set aside.

I decreased the # of piano lessons I have with my friend because I’ve been busy and so has my friend and if I don’t have a lesson with him I spend the $$$ out with friends… so I should be accountable to that… hence the increase in the Other Random unbudgeted account. This is birthdays, holidays, random car repair, getting my nails or eyebrows done, any shopping, household stuff… it’s just lumped into one category to simplify things… especially since its summer and I’ll end up with a whole lot of little things going on this will probably get spent… if not, I’ll filter the money into my “Extra Money” savings account… to spend on big things like vacations and stuff for my house.

Vacation Costs

How much did my 2 week trip ultimately cost me?
• Hotels $175.64
• Additional gasoline: $187.19
• Maintenance on car before trip: $45.82
• Toll Roads to get there and back: $9.25
• Car Wash to get the bugs off my car: $25.10
• Food at Grocery Stores while in Utah $97.47
• Eating out at various restaurants $248.41
• $118.84 on things bought in Utah for me (including a camping air mattress)
• $61.93 gifts for others
• $63.47 on Activities and places to visit
• Doctors visit + 1 prescription $20.00

= $1,053.12

But, I didn’t pay for piano lessons because I was out of town ($80), nor did I spend all my local grocery money ($61.61), nor did I spend all of my regular gas money ($ 50)…

So there’s $191.61 I would have spent if I were at home. So about $861.51 for a two week trip…

Keep in mind the food and eating out were really high because I treated almost all of the dinners we went to get away from my friend’s family (where we could have eaten for free… but our sanity deemed it necessary to leave so the spending is based on 2 people for almost everything.) To put a long story short his parents are extremely Orthodox Mormon (my friend is not) and while they were very polite to me… they were constantly bagging on my friend and accusing him of doing things he wasn’t…. so it wasn’t an ideal situation. We had dinner a couple of times while we were there with them and I followed all of their house rules to the T (including a 10pm curfew—meaning I had to be in my guestroom by ten and my friend had to be in the basement by ten…) so it was nice to be able to go out to dinner to escape the house (and I got to try fabulous places!!! I finally had Japanese food!).

My friend paid for our campsite which was a burden on him since he’s unemployed… but he felt bad for me footing the bill for the rest of the trip and wanted to pay for the site. He also fixed my computer and did some really useful handy things with it which saved me tons of money because if he hadn’t worked his magic, I’d be looking for a new laptop right now.

Other than food and gas (we drove my car all around Utah because it had AC and cruise control and with all the driving we were planning on doing it made sense to take my more comfortable car.) His friends drove their car between all the national parks once we got to the camp site because that’s how they could chip in for the trip which saved me at least one fill up I think. I paid for 2 hotels for the four of us post camping in the city because his friends weren’t in the position to and I wanted a proper shower and a good night sleep before the long drive home, so I booked all of those before I left for Utah.

I ultimately spent more than I would have normally spent to visit a friend… but we weren’t “allowed” to go camping by ourselves (like I said orthodox Mormons) and his friends were already taking time off work (no paid vacation like me) so we would not of been able to go do half the things we planned without them. .. But around $900 isn’t too bad for a two week vacation when it’s been so long since I’ve gotten away and it was FANTASTIC.

Were trying to work out a way for my friend to come visit me in a few months before school starts up again… but we have to figure out how to get his friends here too because he can’t come alone…” his parents won’t let him cause he needs to be chaperoned….”

This Market is wayyyy crazy. I'll be no longer buying shares in my Moderate ING Mutual Fund. They are eliminating it and combining into a less agressive fund... and teh fees are higher there then with my Target date ARDVX. I'll also be putting the rest of my mutual fund $$ for the year into ARDVX, despite the crazy market, I like the fund so far.

When/If the Moderate ING account shows profit (meaning that fund gets into the green, i'll be selling off the profit ever $200.00 or so and converting it into ARDVX... so it will be a slow elimination from my portfolio)

I'm 24

Yup. Today is my birthday and urs truly is 24...

What did I always invision for 24...??? not much. Apparently I can shock myself.

I thought i'd still be saving for a place to live since my goal was property by 25... I never thought i'd be leaving tomorrow to drive to utah for 2 weeks, nor would I have believed that I would train for and complete a marathon...

I guess 2010 really is the year for changes... I'm in my mid 20's now... and i'm finally willing to take risks and chances... and to not just play it safe anymore.

The best feeling ever

I went into my bank, pulled out $4,000.00 in cash...

I went to home depot and handed the lady my Credit statement and told her i'd like to pay it.

She said it was $4,000.00 and i plopped $4,000.00 on the counter in $100 bills...

I just stood there smugly as she checked each one into the camera...

BEST FEELING EVER!!!! WaYYYYY more satisfying then cutting them a check.

emergency fund and money directions

It seems everyone seems set on 6 months of income and/or expenses as a decent emergency fund... (I have around $7,700.00... around 3 months)

Guess i'll be aiming for an emergency fund with $15,500.00 in it! Especially after the crazy market dive down. All my 2010 gains and profits are gone.

It's starting to make more and more sense to start stockpiling liquid reserves and leave the retirement contributions where they are for the time being instead of beefing them up. I can do that once the ef is in better shape... plus i'm in favor of paying down the condo as soon as possible as well... and travel is definently something i want to do.

I should be making around $43,000 this year since salries are frozen and we've taken a couple hits...So $5,000 to the roth, $342.72 will go into my 401a this year; $685.44 to my pension; then another $792.24 to my pension for the buy back i'm participating in.

Thats 6,820.40 to retirement (not counting the other $$$ my employer tosses into my pension) or 15.86% of my GROSS income going to retirement... and i'm not even 25 yet! (turn 24 tomorrow).

Getting back on the healthy ban wagon

Post marathon I took a hiatus from the new healthy living idea I was going with... and i have a lot of damage to undo now... (lol)

anywho... When i get back from my vacation i'll be getting serious and really trying to aim to find balance.

This week alone i went to henrys for the first time in a few weeks, and already the food i'm eating is making me feel better... including my new breakfast idea:

Total Calories: 458
Fat(g) 6.18
Carbs(g)89.42
Fiber(g)11.5
Prot(g) 17.52

1/2 cup organic fat free milk
8 oz sliced strawberries
1 cup trader joes low fat organic vanilla yogurt
1 serving (55 grams) trader joes organic raisin brand clusters

Ya, my breakfast has 11.5 grams of fiber, & 17 grams of protein. I actually eat the cereal first, then an hour or so later I have the fruit and yogurt combo... but if you have a trader joes near you, the organic low fat vanilla yogurt is like heaven on fruit!!!!!

How $8.11 is changing my finances

Okay, The title is a little funny, and i've been hesitant to post this since interest rates on savings accounts are so pitiful... and have been for awhile...and I probably waste that much money and more every month from something or another... but its changing my finances.

I've been saving all those random Pennies and change i've been getting on all my little savings accounts at ING... But i haven't been just adding the money to my emergency fund or what not... I've been putting it into a seperate account. This month I earned $8.11 in interest so that account has a balance of $64.53... all from interest from this year and a bit from Nov and Dec of last year. $60.00 painlessly saved without any effort... without me adding money to it... just by saving the megar interest from my other accounts. and that's the whole point. I'm not going to add anything to it except interest... ever. EFFORTLESS SAVING!

So what is this mini savings account for? I call it my Wealth Builder account. Nothing ever comes out... only interest goes in.... and as that interest grows... it will earn interest too. In Jan the account earned a penny, febuary it earned a penny... you get the picture... This month the wealth builder earned a nickle...

I guess its my little experiment... but I think i'll end up with more then $100.00 by the end of the year!

I was having trouble getting into a novel and devouring it…I’d start a book and put it down… grab something else… attempt it… put it down… So my friend told me to pick up a certain book since he likes to read the same stuff I do occasionally. I had to find it in the teen section… and apparently the author wrote it when she was 13… (You’d have no clue a 13 year wrote it…) totally Fantasy… totally about a vampire… and a really short read. I devoured it… and it was Free from the library. I went back on Friday and picked up the next three in the series because my computer is busted so I can’t catch up on TV shows I missed this week. It’s dirty pleasure weekend!
