Fantastic Home Depot Deal

I got a Free $25.00 gift card to Home Depot in the mail because I signed up for some email program thing on line. All I had to do was cash out in the contractor line.

So I used that $25.00 to buy useful things for my place.

Some AAA batteries because my tv remote died and taked AAA batteries.
A simple basic tool kit since I borrowed a lot of tools from my friends before.
An adjustable wrench
A small level

I paid $0.95

I know most of the tools in the kit will be on the cheaper end, but it will get me through the simple tasks and that's what I was looking for =)

Extra Paycheck Month

Twice a year I recieve 3 paychecks in a single month... But I normally buget to live on 2... So what do I do with this Extra Cash?

I send it to my retirement accounts and never miss a dime!

I normally take the first extra check and use it to buy CD's and stick in my Roth IRA Savings/CD account... the second I use to buy more mutual funds.

Why does this system work for me? Because if I stick two $1,000.00 contributions in my accounts, I only have to funnel in $250.00 a month to max out my Roth IRA for the year... and $250.00 a month is far more do-able than $416.66. It helps make saving for retirement less painful.

So, Since this is my first Extra Check of the year, I'll be sending $1000.00 to my Roth ING Savings account. I'll leave the money liquid at 1.1% interest and depending on CD rate, I may use some of it for a CD if I can get a decent rate... but I highly doubt that I will be able to.

Between dog sitting and planning Vegas... and dental issues

I've been AWOL. More updates to follow in August once I get back from the trip... and the NO SPEND MONTH BEGINS!!!!!!!! (Expect lots of updates because its been so long since i've done one.)

I got my Ticket in the mail: $220.00 (not as bad as I thought). Hopefully I can knock that out in August, and save some $$$$ for the emergency fund.

I'll be contacting Wells Fargo to see if my "statement" credit has been processed yet from THE TILE COMPANY when I get back... so i can mail that letter and get my cash sooner.

Vegas should be interesting and fun so i'm looking forward to it a bit now that I leave later today. =)

Invisiline update... I'm sitting with braces on right now and i remember why i did invisiline... As for my "credit" they upgraded my braces to the clear ones and they aren't making me pay for my final retainers because they can't amend a transaction that's 4ish years old. So i'll be taking that $600.00 I have saved up for Invisiline and dropping it in my emergency fund... (the braces would have cost me $1,000-- and they are going to try and fix my bite while they are at it... so they may remove the bottom retainer and place some brackets down there too...) I just want it over and quickly over! I hate going into that office and no one remembers why i'm there... the "Assistant" thought I was getting my final retainer.... ***rolls eyes***

After all the car stuff... here's a snap shot of my accounts

***I decided not to use $$$ from my car account to cover the car repair bills I used what I could in the budget, and most of my spending account (Extra $$$) for the repairs***

Here's how my accounts are now:

EMERGENCY FUND:
Sallie Mae Savings (1.4%) $200.00
Sallie Mae CD's (3.0%) $100.00
BOFA Checking $1,200.00
ING Checking $1,000.00
ING Emergency Fund (1.1%) $5,296.71 -slowly moving into CD's & Savings at Sallie Mae
ING EF CD $200.00

Total: $7,996.71

Other Accounts:
Extra $$$ $60.29
Invisiline Retainer $$$ $600.33
Christmas Fund $350.00
Car Fund $600.00
Car Tax Bill 2011 $170.00
Costco/AAA Bill 2011 $50.00
Insurance $$$ $520.60

**Wealth Builder $83.81
***Bonds $454.98

** The Wealth Builder account is a collection of the interest I recieve from my other accounts... I'm not sure what to use this money for, but its not apart of my Emergency Fund plan... Maybe my future wedding? or the start of my goal of $1 million???

*** Bonds... I'm considering moving these to part of my emergency fund... but i'm not sure. Thoughts, Ideas? Suggestions? Maybe the start of a house emergency fund?

What I've lost due to the ecoomy thus far... with a rosy twist

10.5% pay cut.

In Jan 2009 they cut out across the board increase from 3.5% to 2.0% for a loss of 1.5% and We still never recieved a promised 2% C.o.l.a. from a while ago TOTAL 3.5%

I went from paying nothing to my pension to 1% but recieved a 1% 401a so I considered that a wash... but then 2% of our salary was required with a 1% 401a... now its 3% of our salary, with no 401a but a one time 1% raise to help offset the initial retirement change.... so I'm calling that a combined 3% loss.

With salaries frozen I will not be recieving a 5-6% normal/average raise.

This doesn't put into consideration the lack of overtime i've lost when they froze that for a while, and the other possible promotions I may have recieved from jobs that they have been forced to eliminate.

But on the upside of things, I still have benefits that have not been reduced, a good full time job with no furlow days, a pension plan that **should** take care of me if I choose to stay here till retirement (tho i'm planning just incase it won't), and they have done everything possible to NOT affect employee's take home pay because they know a lot of employee's partners have beene effected by the economy. I have to say I really do enjoy working for my particular company because they really care about the important things, even if I tend to disagree with things on the day to day basis.

Didnt' get the job... but there is light at the end of the tunnel

BUT there is good news.

The only reason I didn't get the position was due to my lack of training with 2 software programs we use at work...

So they are giving me more training! What I love about my job is that when ever I stick my neck out and try for something bigger, they try and help me get there. Looks like i'm going to get to work on some reports and work a bit in billing processing some invoices soon.

*** Gets excited***

I'm one of those freaks who loves new work, new projects, etc. I just like to be busy while I'm at work. I have to say that the down time is one of the things I dislike most about my job because I like to have things to do and I like staying occupied.

Applied for a new job

I also applied for a new job (so i've been busy-hense the lack of blog updates)

****Crosses Fingers****

I'd get to learn more and have more responsibility, Better hours, More $$$, and no lifeguarding in triple digit weather...

I had to take 4 tests just to be able to apply for it and I passed all of them ***Grins***

I had the interview yesterday and I should know in a week or less. Its kind of hit or miss at this point and it could go either way. If I don't get it I still have my job so its only icing on the cake if I get the new position.

=)

Oh and Yesterdays Market Ralley made me fantastically happy. I'm hoping it will rally some more so I can sell off ING Moderate!!!!

Car battery died | Vegas

Yup...

Had to buy a new car battery because my car failed to even turn over the other day.

Apparently I got roped into a vegas trip with my sister for her boyfriends birthday. Even though I won't get back from the trip till August 2nd (i'll be paying for it with money from JULY's extra check (I get more than $1,000.00 so anything over that is going towards the weekend trip).

So August will still be a no spend month because I need it more than ever... I also agreed to vegas before the car battery died out on me...

and i was originally told we weren't doing any shows and stuff like that. we'd be there next Sat night, Sunday, Leave and get home Monday. Do one nice dinner, a little gambling, and just hang out pool side and relax so I was all in.

Hotel Costs: $40.00
Gas chip in $30.00

I figured $150.00-$200.00 total for the trip cause I'm not really a gambler (Some $$ to gamble and food any any keepsakes as i've never been to vegas).

Without asking, my sister bought tickets to a show... $62.00 a head (my fixed costs just doubled so i'm a little ticked off)

Hotel Costs: $40.00
Gas chip in $30.00
Show Tickets: $62.00

I'm still hoping to try and keep the trip under $200.00 but I doubt that now =(

car repair update

My warranty covered the other door parts... but there's no telling if its fixed till we hit triple digit weather again.

What the guy said is mostly the issue is that the heat is affecting my car alarm and that is preventing the doors from opening when the clicker goes off.

He said if that's the case he'll send someone out to my house or work to replace my alarm to a better model at no cost.

=)

and I saved $1,000 with that warranty i had...

property taxes statement...

Last time i paid my property taxes, I got a rebate check because my property value was re-set to my purchase price.

I just received my yellow notice from the County putting my value at:

Land: $75,016.00
Building & Improvements: $44,984.00

For a total of $120,000.00

So I went to their website, pulled up last years bill to type in all the percentage numbers and volia!

My new tax bill should be $1,276.08 or $638.04 in November and April. Which works out monthly to about $106.35 instead of $125.00 a month.

Once I get the actual numbers bill from the County, I need to fax it over to BOFA so they will reduce the amount of money collected each month. =)

an extra $18 a month I'll be able to send to the pretty land of principle. =)

car still not fixed...

Apparently the electrical thing in the door they "fixed" didn't solve the problem. I'm going to have to take it in tomorrow after work.

***crosses fingers that the issue is under that warranty***

Sold shares today because of the rally

Sold off $500.00 of ING today because of the market rally.

It sold for $8.31 a share.

My account is almost in the green again. If tomorrow looks like its an up day, i'll be selling more in $500 increments.

I've decided to do a no spend month

August.

I have no birthdays and no events that I know of... So for the month of AUGUST I wont buy anything frivolous.

Gasoline
Groceries
Bills (Electric, Cell, Internet, Mortgage, giving, Insurance)

Here's what August's budget should look like:

Mortgage (PMI & Prop Taxes) $828.38
Extra Mortgage Principle $81.75
Giving (LTG) $130.00
HOA $250.00
Gasoline & Car Maint $140.00
Groceries $150.00
Utility Bills (Cell, Electric, Internet) $150.00
Roth IRA $250.00
Insurance (Auto, Homeowner, Earthquake) $102.00
Emergency Fund $128.13
Giving (LTG) $130.00
Christmas $50.00

If all remains successful, I'll have $190 left to save ( from cutting piano lessons $40, Fun $50, Random unbudgeted money$100)! In addition to saving $50 for Christmas and $128.13 to my emergency fund.

I know in August I'll have $160 coming in from Puppy sitting... and i'm hoping that that and the $190 I'll save in August will cover that stop sign ticket I got.

car repairs

=(

I took my car in for its simple maint. check... should have been about $50-70

$625.15

And that was with my Door Actuator under warranty ($313.63 was what it would have cost me to make my doors lock and unlock when I pressed the button on the car door.) Thankfully when I bought my car, I saved the little tiny card in my wallet (its good till 2012 or 100,000 miles and since I don't drive much it will last me until 2012).

Here's the break down:

Front Breaks $249.99
Clean and adjust rear breaks $55
Transmission fluid exchange $159.98
Brake Fluid Exchange $129.98
Door Actuator-tec (free with warranty)
plus regular 5,000 mile maint. $79.99

AAA discount -67.50 (my card just paid for itself)

Total: $625.15

Go figure, as soon as the car fund gets to $600.00 I get huge service repair... Instead of emptying that cause I just don't want to, i'll be using the $500 or so I have in my "extra" money account that I was going to use for shopping and other things...

Invisiline and braces

I was supposed to go in to my ortho apointment on Friday to get braces and "discuss" my partial refund...

Well they called me to reschedule my apointment for next friday... then called me and told me they changed it to Tuesday at 3:00... then I had to call and tell them I had a different dental apointment on Tuesday that I had already cancelled once for their company...

so now i'm not going in till the 30th of the month...

I should have to wear the braced for 3-4 months they say. (I just want to get it over with.)

=(

If i end up getting any money back from them (I definently won't have to pay for the braces ---a $750 cost--- but if they would have done braces from day one i would have been done 2 years ago and saved over HALF the cost...

Puppy Sitting and Extra $$$

I'm House and puppy sitting for a week and getting paid $160.00 for it. (I'm also house sitting in AUG again for a week.)

Plus, I'll be getting a larger paycheck next friday from the holiday weekend.

So when I was out hanging out with my friend Amy... we hit this cute little shop in the mall...

and i saw this dress on a display... and I hate how display clothes never fit you the way they did on the display... but I decided to try it on anyway... and OH MY!!! IT FIT PERFECTLY...

So I bought it, the belt that went with it, and 2 pairs of shoes (my old wedges broke so I was replacing them.)

The total was $107.58 (wayyyy more then i normally would have spent on an outfit) but i've been looking for a dress like this for YEARS.... and it will still fit if i loose those 20 lbs... but if not I have one thing that i absolutely look fabulous in.... and I loved how it was a medium....

The rest of my extra $$$ is going to get my car serviced, and to save up for that ticket I got last week...

Salle Mae

I'm opening another high yield savings account at Salle Mae. Their interst rate tops ING Direct (1.4% to 1.1%) but that's not why i opened another.

I opened it for the CDs. 3% APY on a 60 month CD.

Each month as i add the budgetted amount to my emergency fund, I'll be opening a new CD for $125.00.

My goal is an emergency fund with $15,000.00. I'd like to keep half of that CASH, half in CD's. Half of $15,000.00 is $7,500.00 and if you divide that by 60 months, that's $125.00 a month.

So if i open one 60 month CD with $125.00 a month for the next 60 months my ladder will make itself slowly and expire and renew on time =)

I want to do it gradually incase I need the $$$$ suddenly (Which is why new $$$ will go towards CD's and my current EF will stay liquid).

This way I keep some money (most of it liquid) for now, and i can slowly start building some CD ladders up at good rates instead of the pitiful 1% rate i'm getting now!

Getting Healthy

I need to make getting healthy a serious priority. A while ago I talked about how I was getting sick… and it seems that just eliminating red meat from my diet is no longer working. It bought me 4 months and then some of the symptoms started coming back, and now 2 months later the headaches and migraines are back (which I think are linked to the extra lbs I put on in post marathon/vacation/sprained ankle laziness).

So, I’m going to start walking again and begin a training regiment for the Marathon (yup going to do it next year again… because I’m crazy… and because there isn’t a better cause out there than child s.h.a.r.e.) … and I’m going to get serious about watching what I eat. I’m going to write it all down and carry the book with me so I have no excuses to “forget” about snacks and what not… I’m going to use my food scale when I’m at home to help portion food out… and I’m giving myself 60 days to try and drop around 20 lbs… which would put me at my lowest weight since high school. I’d settle for 15 lbs at the end of 60 days because that would put me a lb or 2 below my light end of normal. 10 lbs would put me at the normal I’ve been for 2-3 years.

While I’ve been making this a priority, I’ve noticed a few things about my now new conscious shopping habits. I’ve stopped frequenting Trader Joes. There are a few really healthy things there I like to buy, but I always end up coming home with some of their frozen foods and convenience foods too… So I think until I can dent this I’ll just be shopping at Henry’s and Ralphs (for basics).

I do miss my trader joes cereal (Organic Raisin bran with clusters)… I bought just regular high fiber raisin bran and I was shocked when I poured it into the bowl and saw all the sugar on all the raisins… It was like sugar city… so even though it’s almost $5 a box for it, I may go get it once I finish eating the box from Ralphs… I miss its healthy goodness.

To get the tile refund...

I have to sign a general release statement... and there's a paragraph about making public statements negatively about the company...

so I took out the company name and replaced it with Tile Company for technical reasons...

But we all know who i was talking about...

(If comments are deleted that were originally published its because they reference the company name-- sorry)

• I’m currently buying additional time in my retirement accounts from when I was 16-18 years of age (Cal PERS service prior to membership). It’s less than a year’s worth of service credit, but I’ll be paying $33.06 for 25 more installments (made 27 payments out of 52).

My entire portfolio (if I cashed my pension out today) is worth $28,460.37

Total Condo Costs Thus Far:

I finally finished resolving the issue with MY TILE COMPANY about my tile. They will be crediting my account $1,265.00 (about 40% of the tile costs) so I thought i'd update "the total condo costs" sheet. I'll have to wait for Wells Fargo to cut me a check for the money, but with the reinburstment and the electrician costs I had last month, I figured it was time to post a little update on where I'm at right now with how much my place has cost me.

Money paid to aquire the property and get keys:
$7,057.08

Money Spent to Remodel and Repair Property:
$17,672.29

total: $24,729.37

First Time Home buyers Credit: $8,000.00
Current equity: $4,058.10 (not including any change in value the upgrades gave me)
Electrician costs -$95.00
TILE Refund $1,265.00

Current amount in the hole: $11,501.27

Total ownership costs are $1,160.12 a month (including HOA, taxes, and all utilities minus electric... and an extra $81.74 to my principle balance)...

Apartment Rent has dropped slightly in my area, but I would have stayed at my old apartment complex if i hadn't bought a home. There current deal for a one bedroom is $1,125.00- $1150.00 plus trash, water, and gas so my comps are still accurate despite adding a little more to the mortgage each month. Sure, I could find a better deal with a private party for a condo or a place... but I have to also look for a place that's as nice as mine is with the remodel... and frankly that wouldn't be from a private party in my area.

So i'm now only $11,501.27 in the hole for my place. I don't have any measurable comps for recent sales from my neighborhood... especially comps from places with similar upgrades so i'm still only valuing my place at its purchase price.

Mortgage Update

New Balance after paying July's mortgage bill: $115,941.90

To Date I've paid an additional $498.19 in extra principle payments. If I stopped now and just paid the minimum balance on my mortgage I have saved $2,602.56 in regular payments and $6,941.47.

That's $9,544.03 for parting with $498.19. Not bad

The stock market

the stock market is in downward spiral mode and everyone is afraid of a double dip recession/depression. They say to be greedy when others are fearful and be fearful when others are greedy... normally i'm very risk adverse, but i'm young that i'm willing to take the gamble these next few months and see where the market takes me.

I originally sold my first chunk ($500) of ING at $7.94 a share... Then sold at $8.32 ($500)and $8.32 ($500.00) again.

I've decided that I'm waiting till I sell off all of ING Moderate to move my account to Vanguard. Once that account is liquidated, I'll sell all of ARDVX in one go and transfer the $$$$ to Vanguard (with $3,000.00 going to VFORX) the rest i'll slowly trickle in from a money market account linked into it.

I've also decided I won't sell the ING Moderate funds below $8.15 with the only exception being if the account goes into a green. So I might have those funds for awhile... = (but i'd like to make Vanguard my new account for the start of 2011... so well see how long i'm willing to hold out.)

I'm also still buying ARDVX every time the market goes down ($100.00 at a time) with the $$$ I got from selling the previous shares asnd with new contributions if needed... but i'd like to avoid that if necessary as i'd like to hold off on depositing contributions into the account until all the money I originally sold has been used up. For the time being that money will stay in a savings account marked Roth IRA.

Trying out a new program… and I know I’m gaining muscle (which weighs more than fat) because I’m less jiggly… but its not making the scale go down… its making it go up or flat line and hover at an amount I’m not even going to disclose here.

My sprained ankle from my trip isn’t helping either. I can’t really run for cardio… so it looks like I’ll be starting to try and walk around more and see if that helps… it just doesn’t burn many calories and takes a long time… time I don’t have.
