Operation Roth IRA 2013: Feb Update!

South County Boy's paycheck hit the checking account on the 27th so we officially closed out the February Budget a day early to make sure we didn't spend the coveted cash so I could set up the transfer.

We are up to: $3,592.57 of our $5,500 goal... and South County Boy is getting antsy at the idea that we still have 2 more months to go without dipping into his paychecks... (I guess he's forgetting that we are trying to live like we don't have that money coming in and start saving it for the future little goober we one day want to have).

But we will make that April 15th deadline if it kills us since we told Uncle Sam and the IRS that we maxed out 2 Roth IRA's on our tax forms. If we stick to our plan, we will only be short $132.43, instead of $174.95! We were able to end February with an extra $42.52.

  • How'd we find $42.52 in our budget?
    • We had a few dollars leftover in our gasoline fund
    • a couple dollars from groceries
    • I cashed in some Credit card rewards as a statement credit when I paid our bill
    • and I made a math error in our favor and magically found around $10 that I thought we had spent but hadn't!

To make the April 15th deadline we are planning to drop $1,000 from SCB's paychecks and $275 from my paycheck in March... and we should get one of SCB's paychecks before the deadline, so that's another $500.
  • March - $1,275.00
  • April - $500.00

If we can't find the $132.43 we need to in our budget in March, our current plan is to float the extra from our emergency fund (since SCB gets a paycheck the following week to replenish it), or use the mysterious "Profit Sharing" check to seal the deal...

SCB's job does profit sharing by individual store, and they cut everyone a check sometime in March.... The problem is we have no idea what kind of money to expect, especially since he wasn't with the company a full year (which means they technically don't have to include him) and he's just the warehouse guy. (I guess they give the sales men and office manager's a larger cut?)...

But all we know is the word of mouth from his boss that they were going to include him and he'd get half of what he normally would based on the years figures because he was there 1/2 the year...

It could be $50.... $100... $500.... $1,000.....????... all we know is one of his co-workers gets excited because the money they get makes a big difference....  I hope we find out sooner rather than later, especially since we have been shorting my Roth IRA contributions just to make the deadline in time. (As we enter March, My Roth is short $825 that we will need to also "catch up" after his 2013 is all set).

Doctors Visit

I mentioned earlier this month how South County Boy would finally be using his new health insurance plan. We picked him a new doctor and he went in so he can get his medications renewed (they require an in person visit every six months).

After navigating the new website and our new benefits, there are a few "silver lining moments."

Looks like his generic "Singular" is completely free to us with the mail in order pharmacy. What would have cost us $37.67 for a 90 day supply was covered by our insurance.... Our doctors visit, not so much.

The quick visit (he brought in his old bottles so the doctor knew what he was taking before and just confirmed that he needed to stay on them) drafted a bill for $240.00.

His insurance will cover $78.98 since it was an "in-network" doctor and this is our "discount" for staying "in-network" but we are on the hook for $161.02.

It's moments like this where I miss his old insurance plan through Kaiser (the one that was deleted after the ACA went into effect). We got one free visit a year and had a standard cheap office co-payment for visits before a deductible.... and everything I needed I could find on their website, which isn't the case with our new insurance.

Now i'm stuck navigating through Blue Shield Blue Cross of Texas... yes, another state! His insurance comes through Texas because that's were his companies corporate office is and they buy insurance for all their other states through Texas apparently... and to be honest, I can't find a single packet that explains his plan online at all... the last bit of information I got said:
We pay 20% after a $1,000 deductible and had $30 office visits.
Which, since we got a bill for $161 seems a little off to me. We also never received any new information when 2014 rolled in... just a slightly higher premium that was deducted from his paycheck.

I called customer service and after waiting 30 minutes on hold I was told that they don't have an explanation of benefits packet that they mail out, nor is one posted online. I was a little shocked and asked her how I was supposed to compare insurance policies without any information? You know, knowing what to expect to pay for an office visit before making an appointment would be kind of nice to know... especially since we are in a different state and therefore we don't have a Texas zip-code so their website doesn't help us at all.

I explained that we kind of just took a leap of faith with it when we purchased it back in November because SCB's old plan was cancelled under the ACA and it was the cheaper option with the information that we had... but now we are apparently paying $160 to go and just get a prescription renewed.

Eventually she gave me a phone number for SCB to call to at least get a Summary of Benefits and Coverage, but she told me even that wouldn't provide a lot of information.... but at least its a start. Guess i'll be having SCB make some phone calls this week. I also had him ask around the office. His boss told him today that the $30 office visits only kick in after we go through the $1k deductible... but then why did they cover almost $79 of our office visit (not that i'm complaining about them covering things-- I just want to know how the thing works)....

So far the only perk looks like free prescriptions... But we won't be using that for everything. SCB wants to be able to get his antidepressants at a moments notice, so he prefers we pay $10 for a 3 month supply from Walmart since there is one on every corner practically and worst case he had to walk around the store for a few minutes while they process them. (He tends to be forgetful and doesn't want to wait up to 2 weeks for them to be mailed to him.) I'm hoping this will also include his inhalers.

Sick Sick Sick

We have been down and out the past few days with runny noses and headaches my friends... I'm not sure how many snotty tissues Roxy tried to eat over the last few days (I know she tore up one for sure)... but I'm glad to say we are on the mend now and feeling back to normal for the most part.

After a perfect month of not wasting food, this month alone I've already pitched 4 artichokes, a head of lettuce, & 3 potatoes. While it was only $1.50 from this months budget (the artichokes and potatoes were bought last month), in total it was around $9... I'm not sure if we pitched anything else... I just can't remember since its been a little foggy the past couple days.

I can blame some of the tossed produce on us being sick. South County Boy was sick one week so we didn't cook much of what we planned... and then I got sick the next week which meant he was all over the $5 pizza route and getting me take out (because when i'm sick, I CRAVE pick up stix)...

If i'm being honest, on days where we weren't ill, we also didn't really following our meal plan... we were just a bunch of lazy bums. So I know we spent more than we planned on eating out this month especially with valentines day (I had to work so he brought me dinner), but we're still in line with the budget for the most part because other areas ended up with a little extra padding.

We are trying really hard not to over spend...

We are trying really hard not to overspend this month.

REALLY HARD

That over there is our computer.

The only computer we have...

and it doesn't look pretty.

The other day the computer started to randomly shut off on us. There was no rhyme or reason to it. One minute i'd be blogging, the next the screen would turn off and i'd hear the horrible sounds of work being automatically lost as the CPU shutdown.

Since South County Boy is somewhat computer savvy, he built the computer from scratch a few years ago with his brother who is even more tech savvy then he is.... So since he knew what he was doing, he went ahead and took the thing apart. After a bit of cleaning he figured out why it kept shutting off on us. The fan blew out and was no longer cooling the system.

What irks me the most is just last year in February of 2013 we spent $300 on new computer parts... including a new LARGE fan for the computer... and now its broken.... 1 year later.

So for the time being, SCB took the cover off it and we are putting our large and in charge house fan right up against the computer. If the computer is on, so is the HUGE fan. Now considering how the computer is how we watch TV, Blog, and practically do everything, this you would say is kind of a fix it priority.

The only problem is we have already spend our discretionary money for the month because $92 went to paying for our taxes to get done and earlier this month I finally told SCB that he could get a pair of Sunday Church sandals (he hates shoes), a few odds and ends and Valentines day.... its basically gone.

So the computer will have to wait until next month along with running shoes for SCB. As I sit here typing this i'm covered with goosebumps because its cold out this morning and I wasn't thinking when I decided I wanted to have a smoothie for breakfast.

So here's to crossing our fingers that our makeshift solution will keep it running until next month.

Oh the things we do to keep our budget in tact...

Mid month update

Operation Roth IRA:
I just transferred $1,000.00 to operation Roth IRA. We got our tax return today, and considering our tax return says we max out a Roth IRA for SCB for 2013, we better do it. We got a $400 tax credit for maxing out TWO Roth IRA's, and credits are awesome because they knock down your taxes dollar for dollar.

To make sure the money didn't disappear, the nano second the funds hit my account I transferred the $1k to our savings account. We now have $2,275.05 in the savings account to use to open his Roth IRA.

As you know, we have until Tuesday, April 15 to hit the deadline. If we stick to our plan, we will only be short $174.95 by the deadline now! We are aiming to drop $1,000 from SCB's paychecks and $275 from my paychecks for both Feb and March... and $500 from April since we will only have one of SCB's paychecks in April before the deadline.
  • February - $1,275.00
  • March - $1,275.00
  • April - $500.00
Right now the plan is to borrow $174.95 from our EF for a week or so since SCB would get a second paycheck the next week after the deadline so we could put it back.... but we don't want to because we are already shorting my Roth IRA in the time being and want that second April check to help dent catching my Roth IRA back up since it will be short $825 for 2014...

Last night the whole "profit sharing" thing came up. SCB's job/company does profit sharing and they get a check in March.... but we have no idea what that will be amount wise since he wasn't with the company a full year and they technically don't have to include him since he wasn't there the whole year (but his boss told him they would pro-rate it?).

Car Registration
Normally we'd also use our tax return to register my car for 2014 and take care of a couple of other annual bills, but with operation Roth IRA, we only got a little over $1k back from the return. Thankfully  we have some money in savings that can help cover this years payment (with a few of the extra dollars that came in with the tax return). Starting next month we will amend our budget and start putting $25 a month aside like we do with our car insurance bills so we have the money to cover these expenses next year without having to rely on our tax return.

Doctors Visit
SCB went to his new doctor for the first time with his new insurance. We are paying slightly more a month then we did last year, but it looks like there maybe a couple perks. He can still get his anti-depressants at Walmart for $10 for a 3 month supply... but it looks like his generic Singular asthma meds are free through the mail in pharmacy!

We have no idea what the doctors visit costs us. They send us a bill and then SCB will have to call to figure out how to submit a claim so we see how much we really pay/owe.

Mortgage Update Feb 2014

Principle paid down: $324.59
Interest: $345.37
Additional Principle: $0.19
New Balance: $110,195.80

The pay off date is June 2033.

If I continue to pay the minimum on my loan, we will end up paying a total of $69,410.24 in interest over the course of our entire loan.

Before our refinance, we would have paid $116,404.23 in interest.

Getting the Keys...

It took me $7,057.08 to get the keys to my condo and then I spent another $17,672.29 to remodel and repair it... In short, I was -$24,729.37 in the hole on day one...
  • In 2009 I got the First Time Home buyer's Credit giving us $8,000.00. I also got to write off some of the property tax I paid in addition to taking the standard deduction. This gave us an extra $90.10... but then I had to pay an Electrician $95.00 to fix an outlet... We also got a refund from my botched tile job that gave us another $1,265.00.
  • In 2010 I saved $1,087.00 on my federal taxes and $461.00 on my State taxes from itemizing my homeowners expenses. (This is what I received ABOVE what I would have gotten back with just the standard deduction).
  • In 2011 I spent $12.97 at home depot and $72.29 on a kitchen door. When we subtract those costs from what we saved by living in our condo instead of renting, we came out ahead $494.04 (See Mortgage Update + Condo Costs December '11 for that break down.) We also received a small $70 refund check from over paid closing costs. We didn't Itemize our taxes in 2011.
  • In 2012 we finished our Kitchen/Laundry door which cost us $103.24.. We also replaced both our glass slider doors which cost us $2,957.00... and repaired our dryer for $81.42....It ended up being $3,383.47 cheaper to OWN our condo than to rent an apartment on a monthly basis, (See Housing Costs 2012 for the break down) so even after we subtract the windows and other minor repairs, we still came out ahead $241.81 by owning our condo instead of renting...
  • In 2013 we got $52.53 back from challenging my property taxes in 2012. I also refinanced our condo, costing us $447.00 up front for our home appraisal... but we got a check back at closing for $747.20 and a check from my old escrow account for $489.74... We also got to skip a mortgage payment too! In addition, they automatically lowered my property tax value, giving us a check for $86.77.. and we saved $5,191.81 by NOT renting a place!! (see Housing Comps 2013 $16,977 for an apartment, $11,785.19 for the condo). Additionally we ITEMIZED our taxes in 2013, saving $702.45 on a federal taxes and $503.74 on our State Taxes. (This is what we would have owed had we not had our property to write off).
All of that "math" leaves us $5,788.18 in the hole. If we assume our home is worth at least what we paid for it ($120k), we have $9,801.202 in equity...

Leaving us $4,013.02 in profit after 4 yrs & 5 months! Woohoo!

Even though we broke even at the end of 2013, I still want to keep track of how much money our condo is saving us each year. For 2014, we will again assume our monthly mortgage payments are going to be a wash since it's cheaper to OWN our home then to RENT an apartment. (Check out Housing Comps 2014 for how we figured that one out). For 2014 we have spent $2,157.33 to live in our condo, instead of $2,882 to live in the apartment.
  • Mortgage: $1,339.92 (P&I)
  • Extra Mortgage Principle: $13.19
  • HOA: $540.00
  • Property Taxes: $203.87
  • Small Home Repairs/Improvements: $60.35
    • $6.44 fix something under the sink
    • $53.91 New front door deadbolt
So far we have saved $724.67 by owning our condo and not renting an apartment in 2014.

Current Housing Market:
One-Bedrooms Listed/Sold in our Complex:
  • Asking: n/a
  • Sold in last 6 months $220,000 (January 2014)
Two-Bedrooms Listed for Sale in our Complex:
  • Asking $285,000 (Days of Market technically 135)
    • Listed 9/30/13
    • Delisted 12/18/13
    • Relisted 1/7/14
  • Sold in the last 6 months: $255,000.00 (February, 2014)
  • Sold in the last 6 months: $185,000.00 (August, 2013)- Short Sale
  • Sold in the last 6 months: $257,000.00 (August, 2013)

It looks like we are itemizing this year!

I'm still a little shocked when I see that title since I have not itemized my taxes in probably forever it seems. I don't even remember if I itemized when I bought my condo 4.5 years ago? But, either way, turbo tax told us to so we are. Apparently with our church giving and our refinance, we got pushed over the top

So how did we do?

I'm thrilled to say we took in more money then last year. With my new job and hubs now full time job, we were able to make just over $58,000.00 last year!

We made $16,500 more dollars than last year!
WOOT! WOOT

With the help of Turbo Tax, we were able to take that amount and transform it down to an adjustable gross income of slightly over $35,500 for an effective tax rate of 6.97%. Last year our effective tax rate was 5.38%.

We should be getting just over $700 back from the feds.

For the state, our taxable income came in just under $45,000.00 and our effective tax rate on the state level was 1.22%. Last year our taxable income was a little less than $30,000 and our tax rate was 0.61%

We are getting just under $300 back from the folks in California.

Yes, I paid for Turbo tax and it cost us around $90 to file our taxes this year for both the state and the federal. We paid for the home business version that's a bit more pricey so we could take the nearly $2k in profit from our woodturning business and make it only $9 of taxable income with all the business expenses and receipts I saved. (We won't be able to do that for 2014... but we had a lot of equipment purchases and materials in 2013).

Every year I say this because I know there are free file options and you all are going to comment on why I didn't use them, but I always end up owing money or not getting as much back when I try to use those other options because i'm stupid. I can't read and follow the tax directions because the wording is so funky... So yes, I spend around $90 to do our taxes and that normally gets cancelled out by the extra money the software gets me in credits and deductions.

This year we got a $400 credit for our plans to max out both Roth IRA's by the deadline... and with our tax return, I think we can make it if we stick to our plan and our budget!!! We may not even have to touch SCB's profit sharing money!!!

Why I'm running the Disney 1/2 Marathon

While I wanted to run the Disney Dumbo Double Dare, I'll have to settle for the 1/2 marathon this year because it sold out before I could register for it.. but I wanted to take a few moments to tell you why I registered because

This isn't just some race for me...

As many of you may know, I should have been put into foster care when I was growing up. If you have been following the blog for some time, you know my story.

If your new, you can check out the "About Me" tab at the top for all the details, but the truth of the matter is that my father was both mentally and physically abusive. My father's addiction and dependency on alcohol and other substances made living in my home unbearable because his rage filled every day... we walked on egg shells, never knowing when he would snap.

I grew up living a life surrounded by fear.

I remember one night sitting on my bed, wishing someone would come and take me away from this nightmare. I had already watched my father throw a plate at my mom's head in a drunken rage because dinner was cold. As I went to my room to hide from the madness, I saw him shove her up against the wall and choke her as she cried and apologized. As I sat back and heard the yelling and death threats continue, I knew I was going to have to slip out and escape through the window in my bedroom and go down to the store with my sister to use the pay phone to call 911... again.

...

I remember multiple times where I sat in the back of a police car... not because I did anything wrong, but because I had to run down to the store to use that payphone... and no child should have to do that.

Through it all I somehow survived my childhood... but only a small percentage of kids like me do.

In college I found The Child Share Program, Inc., a non-profit group that finds homes for kids like me. Kids that need love and stability... a place to learn who they are and above all, a place to feel love and safety.

For over 28 years, Child S.H.A.R.E. has found safe and loving homes for over 3,100 abused and abandoned children in California. Working through a diverse network of over 450 faith communities and volunteers, Child S.H.A.R.E. recruits foster and adoptive parents and provides support services in 3 languages (English, Spanish and American Sign Language).
Child S.H.A.R.E. finds safe, stable and loving homes offering long term solutions for children in foster care. Impressively, two out of three children placed in a Child S.H.A.R.E. home stay with the same family until they are reunited with relatives or adopted and over 500 children have been adopted by Child S.H.A.R.E.families which is almost TRIPLE the national adoption rate.

and I'm going to Run the Disney Half Marathon in August on their behalf.

On average it takes $2,500 to recruit and help place a child in a home (a fraction of what it takes the government to do the same thing)... They train and offer support services to families and provide the best solution to the problem that I have ever found.

I'll put in the training, I'll run the miles, but I can't do this without you. Together we can change a life. Please consider making a donation online on my fundraising page and sharing this message with those you know.

February Budget

Here's our game plan for February. Since we are really working on maxing out SCB's Roth IRA for 2013... we are going to try and stick to our budget this month and not go crazy (even with valentines day).

Health Insurance
I had to revise the number slightly because we had our new health insurance premiums go in place so my checks shrunk a little in the take home department. Speaking of health insurance, SCB will be testing his new work insurance this month because he needs to go into the doctors to get his prescriptions renewed... Hopefully the $200 or so we have in savings will cover whatever out of pocket costs we will incur.

Groceries/Getting Healthy
We didn't make it last month, but hopefully we can swing our shorter 28 day month and get our average grocery spending closer to $300 a month and buy organic as much as possible. SCB is noticing a difference in how he feels when we eat better than when we don't... Which is good because I need him on board for this to really workout in the long run.

Taxes
We may also be able to file our taxes this month... but only if we get our hands on the last W2 from the temp agency SCB worked for when he worked for Goodwill... They said they have mailed them out, but we still haven't gotten it... Depending on that income, we may or may not get a size-able refund. Right now without it, we are, but that may all change because we aren't sure how much money he made with the temp agency and how much was withheld for taxes.

Operation Roth IRA 2013
Hopefully the tax return will help us on operation 2013 Roth IRA... but we also need a little of our tax return to handle our annual bills (We normally take a few hundred from our tax refund and save it for paying our Car registrations and other annual small bills that come in right around that same time.)

Next month is also "profit sharing" month for SCB's company. Were not sure how much he will get since he worked only part of the year, and he gets less then the sales guys because he's just in the warehouse, but were hoping it might be something that can help us cover the shortfall by the deadline.... but we won't know until next month so with that being said, our goal for February is going to be to send another $1,275.00 to his 2013 Roth IRA. We have until Tuesday, April 15, 2014, so if we stick to our plan we will still be short $1,175.00 by the deadline since we only have $1,275 right now.
  • February - $1,275.00
  • March - $1,275.00
  • April - $500.00 (SCB will only get 1 paycheck before the deadline)
We can hopefully float $500 from our EF for a week or so since SCB would get a paycheck the next week so we could put it back... but that leaves us to find $675 over the course of the next couple months... and we still have to register my car for 2014 right around that time too which will take a couple hundred since it has to be SMOG'd too.

February Budget:
Spending
Mortgage: $771.99
Church Tithe: $580.00
Other Church offerings: $40.00
Groceries/Household Items: $300.00
Date Nights & Eating Out: $100.00
Pocket Money (each) $40
Cell Phone Work Reimbursement: $60.95
HOA: $270.00
Utility Bills: $150.00 (Second cell, Electricity, Internet)

Discretionary: $197.00

Saving
Christmas Savings: $50.00
Birthday/gifts Savings: $50.00
Vacation Savings: $100
Roth IRA: $1,275.00
Insurance Savings: $143.00
Prescriptions/Doctors Visits: $50.00

Operation 2013 Roth Ira... End of January Report.

So how did we do after buying a vacuum and paying over $400 to register for the Disney Half marathon...? I'll tell you.

We made our January benchmark goal of sending $1,275.00 to the Roth IRA fund.

I have no idea how we did it... we over spent on groceries and I knew we spent more then just that one extra paycheck we knew we were getting from SCB since we had to register for the 1/2 marathon (and not the Dumbo Dash because it sold out).

So how did we get to $1,275?

I knew we had budgeted $275 from one of my paychecks to go to his 2013 Roth, because we normally have that money go to mine. As soon as that paycheck hit my account, I transferred the money over and deducted it like a bill so I wouldn't forget... We also had a few dollars of interest sitting in the savings account that we normally use to hold the money before transferring it over to Vanguard. With that we were at $278.27... which meant $996.73 to go.

Since SCB's last paycheck wouldn't hit out account until Friday the 31st, on the 29th I cut off our monthly spending and added up the damage because I knew nothing else would be spent until Feb (our next date night was scheduled for Feb 1st).

After all of our spending and budgeted itemized saving was taken care (transferring money to insurance, Christmas, birthdays, vacations etc), we had, to my surprise $481.82 left in the checking account.

That's almost all of SCB's second paycheck (well minus the tithing check).

I went back to look at our budget numbers and despite overspending on groceries, we had a low gas month, didn't go crazy on eating out, & only had one cell phone bill to pay, so the lower other expenditures created a little cushion in our budget to help absorb the marathon costs...

Mix that in with the fact that we were able to swap out the vacuum from Costco for the cheaper identical one at Kohls made it all work out, especially since the 1/2 marathon was cheaper then the Dumbo Double Dare.

So if we send that $481.82 to his Roth IRA, we need $514.91 to meet out goal... and his last check will give us around $520 of disposable income after tithing...

Woot! It's like magic!

We are still on track for our goals for 2014!

What we Spent in January

Happy end of January everyone. I think a great word to describe January for me would be feeling accomplished. Sure my condo is pretty un-organized and still cluttered as I type this out, but I can't help but feeling good right now.

I've been working out (Yeah for cross training) and I feel like we have just eaten really well  (woot)... or perhaps its cause i'm checking out that picture of me in a navy blue dress I scored while out in Utah for only $6.... (right?). But i'm feeling good today... and I feel great about how we spent our money in January, even if we weren't perfect with our groceries.

We finally got around to doing a few small things around the house that had been growing on our nerved. You all saw the post about how I organized our end of year files, but we also replaced our deadbolt on our front door and  we replaced some of our sink piping fixtures that leaked when we ran the garbage disposal.

It was a simple $50 fix for the deadbolt and less than $10 for the sink, but its so nice just to have them done for a change... and to have the money in our budget to do them!

I'm also proud to say I've been cooking and we haven't had to toss a SINGLE piece of produce all month long!!!!!  I don't know when the last time I have been able to say that with a straight face.

In fact, we have only eaten out once a week for our regular date night all month long... and everything else we have been cooking and buying clean, healthy and organic foods.... even if it meant shopping in my mickey mouse pj's because we forgot to buy some much needed recipe ingredients.

But I've really enjoyed cooking and providing more real foods for the two of us.

SCB and I are a little bummed about the Dumbo Dash... It sold out before we could register. We got the 1/2 marathon, but not the dumbo dash :( So I guess its only 13.1 miles to glory for 2014... and since registration was selling out, we won't have the full $1200 we wanted for his Roth IRA this month since we had to drop $400 on our combined registration.

Other than that, we did pretty well with our spending.
That is the $5 dry/wet vac hubby got to buy at
Home Depot when he was making key copies..
We got it for $5 because it was missing a wheel
and they couldn't really sell it without a wheel...
and they couldn't just give it to us... but
somehow we ended up taking it home for
 only $5...
